MPI/Dark Sky Films and XYZ Films have announced XX at AFM, styled as a “landmark all-female horror anthology” with each segment featuring a female director and female lead.

Directors on board so far include Jennifer Lynch, Mary Harron, Karyn Kusama, The Soska Sisters Jen and Sylvia and Jovanka Vuckovic.

The filmmakers will develop original stories to be linked by work from Guadalajara-based stop-motion animator Sofia Carrillo.

MPI/Dark Sky Films handles international sales and co-represents the film with XYZ Films.

Todd Brown will produce for XYZ while Greg Newman, evp of Dark Sky Films parent company MPI Media Group, will serve as executive producer alongside XYZ’s Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian.

“We know that women make up about half of the audience for horror films, and yet the female creative voice has been nearly silent in the horror genre,” said Newman.

“So we are thrilled about the new and distinct approach that these talented directors will bring to the project.”

A study released in conjunction with the Sundance Film Festival last January reported that women accounted for 4.4% of directors in the top 100 films at the box office over a 10-year period from 2002-2012.

“One of the givens of so many horror films has been the objectification of young women, and we thought it was time for a different approach to scaring audiences and letting the female voice be heard,” said Brown.
