Columbia Pictures top brass made the announcement on Friday (28) in the wake of the summer success of The Amazing Spider-Man’s $751m worldwide haul.

Emma Stone is in talks to return as Gwen Stacy in the sequel scheduled to open in 3D on May 2 2014. Production is set to start in early 2013.

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner are writing the screenplay based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce.

“We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker,” Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad said.

“We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”
