Antonio Banderas will star in The 33, the true story of the 33 Chilean Miners whose rescue in 2010 became one of the most televised events in history. Good Universe handles international sales in Cannes.

Production is set to commence this autumn in Chile. Banderas will play the role of Mario Sepulveda the charismatic miner known to the world as ‘Super Mario’.

Producer Mike Medavoy secured the miners’ exclusive life rights last year and developed the project in collaboration of the miners the rescuers and their families.

Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro will also join the ensemble.

Patricia Riggen directs the film and Medavoy and Edward McGurn are producing.

Carlos Eugenio Lavin and Leopoldo Enriquez serve as executive producers.
