Bavaria Film International has taken on the German-Irish co-production Superhero, which started shooting this week in Dublin.

Ian FitzGibbon (Perrier’s Bounty) directs and from a screenplay adapted from Anthony McCarten’s novel Death of a Superhero.

Andy Serkis, Thomas Brodie Sangster, Aisling Loftus, and Jessica Schwarz lead the cast.

Germany’s Bavaria Pictures is producing with Ireland’s Grand Pictures. Backers are the Irish Film Board, the German Federal Film Board, the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Bavarian Banking Fund. Superhero was developed with support from the MEDIA Programme.

The production will shoot in Ireland for six weeks and then move to Munich in November. Animation work and post-production will be done in Germany.

The film will be released at the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012. In Germany, NFP is handling distribution while in Ireland, Element Pictures is on board.

Sangster stars as a seriously ill teenage boy who retreats into his self-made comic book world. Serkis plays his psychiatrist.
