EXCLUSIVE: Shanghai-based producer and sales company Fundamental Films is out to Chinese and US cast on its new spy thriller China Black Chamber.

Fundamental has packaged the film as a China-US project and chairman and CEO Mark Gao Jingdong and his team are in advanced talks with a major US producer and sales agents here in Toronto.

The company is investing equity and retains Chinese distribution rights on the project, consistent with its model of partnering with Chinese and international companies on $20m-plus projects.

China Black Chamber is about a US spy recruited by the Chinese to infiltrate Japanese intelligence in 1938.

Separately, Fundamental has a first-look development deal with Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road in the US that has already set in motion an English-language remake of Les Lyonnais to star Liam Neeson as well as The Drop and 24 Hours To Live.

Fundamental’s slate includes animation The Prince And The 108 Demons and Warrior’s Gate with EuropaCorp, Replicas with Company Films and Black Frog with Same Player.

“Transitioning into English-language films is undeniably the clear-cut next step for us as a company,” said Gao. “We are excited to embark on this new venture and bring our knowledge from our experiences in the foreign language film world to the US.”
