The Killing star Lars Mikkelsen has joined the cast alongside Lorraine Pilkington and a host of young Irish actors.

Shooting will get underway this week on Lenny Abrahamson’s What Richard Did, for Element Pictures.

Set in present day Dublin the film group of privileged teens over the course of the summer after they leave school, focusing in particular on Richard, a popular sports star, whose life is changed forever after a senseless act of violence.

Abrahamson, whose credits include Adam & Paul and Garage, will direct from a script by Skins and Shameless writer Malcolm Campbell, loosely based on Kevin Powers’ 2008 novel Bad Day At Blackrock.

Jack Reynon, Sam Keeley and Roisin Murphy are amongst the young Irish actors who will star in the film, alongside Lorraine Pilkington and The Killing actor Lars Mikkelsen.

Ed Guiney is producing and Andrew Lowe is exec producing, both for Element Pictures, the production company behind The Guard and The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Shooting will take place in Dublin and Wicklow for 5 weeks, with backing from the Irish Film Board.

Element Pictures Distribution will release in 2012.
