The star has signed on opposite George Lopez in the story, based on Joshua Davis’ WIRED magazine story.

Pantelion Films, the red-hot distribution joint venture of Lionsgate and Televisa that released the Labor Day smash Instructions Not Included, will handle the film.

Sean McNamara will direct and Lopez produces through his Travieso Productions with David Alpert of Circle Of Confusion, Rick Jacobs, Leslie Kolins Smith and Ben Odell. 

Principal photography began this month in New Mexico on the story of four undocumented Mexican-American teenagers from Phoenix who build an underwater robot and beat the reigning champions MIT to win the national robotics competition.

Tomei will portray a dedicated and passionate teacher who helps the team to success.
