Media Rights Capital (MRC) is getting into business with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp and will back an untitled sci-fi project from the in-demand South African.

Serving as producer is QED International CEO Bill Block, whose company financed District 9 before Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group acquired it. District 9 went on to become one of the hits of the summer with a worldwide gross of more than $184m.

Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2010 and Blomkamp will write and direct.

“As District 9 proved, Neill Blomkamp is one of the most innovative and creative minds in the film world today,” MRC Films president Tory Metzger said. “We could not be more excited to be teaming up with him on his next project.”

“Audiences have formed a connection with Neill because he takes them to worlds they’ve never experienced before,” MRC CEO Modi Wiczyk said. “We look forward to partnering with him on his follow-up to District 9. Because we are a company centered on leading creative talent just like Neill, we believe this is an excellent match.”

“I am very pleased to continue my relationship with Neill on this amazing original idea with MRC,” Block added.
