Hot on the heels of the $607m global smash Fast Five the studio has wasted little time cementing a formal partnership with the filmmaker and announced that the Lin-directed Fast And Furious 6 will open on May 24, 2013.

The two-year pact will produce “elevated tentpole and distinctive mainstream fare” for the global market. The Barnstorm Pictures slate includes spy action project Leading Man, Untitled 442 Project about a WWII Japanese American battalion and an untitled sci-fi / crime thriller to be directed by Robert Glickert.

Lin’s team includes president of production Elaine Chin, formerly a development executive at Fox and HBO Films. The offices will be based on the Universal lot. Fast Five is known outside North America as Fast And Furious Five.

“The success that we’ve shared making the last three Fast films has created a strong bond between my team and many at Universal,” Lin said. “When the opportunity came up to house Barnstorm at the studio where I honed my skills, I saw the chance to develop innovative projects with talented writers and directors who need to have their voices heard.”

“Justin’s vision and unique approach to filmmaking have been critical to the continued success of the Fast And Furious franchise,” Universal’s co-president of production Jeff Kirschenbaum said. “We know his creative instincts and signature style will make Barnstorm’s partnership with Universal a strong one.”

“Justin is an exceptional talent and a valuable asset to add to the Universal fold,” Universal’s co-president of production Peter Cramer added.

Lin is attached to direct the fifth instalment of James Cameron’s Terminator franchise; action-adventure and manga adaptation Lone Wolf And Cub; the Western Brigands Of Rattleborge; and psychological drama We Disappear.

He previously directed Fast And Furious, The Fast And Furious: Tokyo Drift and Better Luck Tomorrow.
