The Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) is set to change its name to Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

The fest’s organising committee is due to make the change official at a general meeting on Feb 24.

PIFF has been using the “P” spelling since its inception in 1996. The festival’s host city changed its name from Pusan to Busan in 2000 with a revision in the Romanization system for the Korean alphabet. However, the fledging festival, which had just started to make its name known at home and abroad, decided to stick with its moniker to avoid branding confusion.

After 15 years, the festival’s profile has risen and a new festival centre is due to be opened this October, and so the organising committee deemed it a good time to make the switch.

In addition to the film festival, the South Korean port city of Busan also plays hosts to a Biennale and fests for advertising, dance and theatre.
