Sophie Barthes, who collaborated with Giamatti on Sundance 2009 entry Cold Souls, will direct from Rose Barrenche’s adapted screenplay based on Gustave Flaubert’s celebrated 19th century novel.

Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino of Occupant Entertainment are producing Madame Bovary, which is set to commence principal photography in autumn.

Wasikowska will play the social climber and pig farmer’s daughter who embarks on affairs to escape the tedium of her marriage to a small-town doctor.

Miller earned acclaim for his role in last season’s awards contender We Need To Talk About Kevin and will play Wasikowska’s love interest.

Madame Bovary is one of the most passionate, tragic and intriguing story’s we have come to love,” Radiant Films’ president and CEO Mimi Steinbauer said. “The producers have assembled an enviable team of actors and filmmakers and this film is set to stand a cut above the rest. I am just delighted to be aboard.”

Steinbauer negotiated the rights with Neurauter and Marino. Mark Ankner at WME is handling US rights to the film.
