The BFI archives of classic films - for instance of films made in the 1940's and 1950's should be available free via the library system. Cinema is part of our national heritage and as such we should view and be able to order any DVD from our public libraries in the same way we can order books The film-makers can be paid a percentage of the rental charge. The BFI are simply not doing enough in this regard. The above is a smart enough idea ok - its like pay tv but it does not help all those who dont have internet access or would prefer to watch a dvd - even just as a one off. The Government could easily underwrite such a scheme on a national basis instead of funding new buildings (for the few) in London which are not needed or welcomed in any case.
We need to think about what will benefit the most people - of all ages- not just a narrow band of people.
