Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group (SPWAG) has acquired all US rights to the $60m CGI animated family picture Planet 51.

Sony Pictures Releasing will give the picture a wide North American release under the TriStar Pictures label on November 20 2009.

Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Gary Oldman and John Cleese will voice the key characters in the story of a space mission that has to elude an anti-alien army after astronauts land on an orderly planet inhabited by fearful green inhabitants.

Jorge Blanco directed with co-directors Marcos Martinez and Javier Abad from a screenplay by Joe Stillman.

Ilion Animation Studios CEO Ignacio Perez Dolset is producing with HandMade Films International chairman Guy Collins, with Peter D Graves, Michael Ryan and Jose A Rodriguez serving as executive producers.

HandMade Films International has been handling pre-sales and recently closed deals with TF1 in France and Moviemax Italia in Italy. A Planet 51 video game is under development at Ilion.
