Peter Jager’s Vienna-based Autlook and Jan Rofekamp’s Quebec-based Films Transit (two of the leading doc sales outfits) have confirmed that they will be jointly selling the Sundance-bound Big Boys Gone Bananas.

Films Transit International represents all rights in US and Canada while Autlook represents the rest of the world.

Big Boys Gone Bananas is Swedish director Fredrik Gertten’s follow-up to his film Bananas!* (2009), which provoked a huge furore when the filmmakers were sued by multi-national corporation Dole Food. Bananas!* was sold internationally by Autlook.

The new film, a North American premiere in the World Documentary Competition in Sundance (after its world premiere at IDFA), tells the story of Gertten’s battle against lawsuits and dirty tricks to get his original film seen.

Big Boys Gone Bananas, produced through WG Film, shows how Gertten and his producer Margaret Jangard dealt with the legal action brought against them by Dole, organised for their film to be shown in the Swedish Parliament and eventually won their own case for defamation.

Jangard and director Gertten commented that they were “delighted” to have both companies on board.

The film receives its first screenings in Sundance on Friday and over the weekend.
