Revolution Studios' supernatural thriller The Forgotten went straight to the top of the chartson an estimated $22m at the weekend, a quiet weekend that saw Fox's FirstDaughter disappoint infourth place and a top 10 opening for Shaun Of The Dead, the first release from Focus Features'genre arm Rogue Pictures.

The Forgotten stars Julianne Moore as a grieving mother who must prove that herdead son actually existed. Joseph Ruben's picture, which drew mixed reviews,also stars Dominic West and Gary Sinise. It averaged $7,087 on 3,104 screens.

In First Daughter, which opened on $4m to poor reviews, Katie Holmes plays thePresident's daughter who falls for her young bodyguard while attending college.

Marc Blucas and Michael Keaton star in the romantic comedy whichwas directed by Forest Whitaker. It averaged $1,770 on 2,259 screens.

Shaun Of The Dead, which opened eighth on $3.3m, is the brainchild of Britishcomedian Simon Pegg, who co-wrote with directed Edgar Wright and stars as alovelorn antihero who must overcome the dastardly forces of undead thatthreaten to take over London.

It was a fine debut and a memorable maiden voyage for RoguePictures, Focus' genre label that will follow up with Seed Of Chucky in November.

Elsewhere, Paramount's SkyCaptain & The World of Tomorrow slippedone place to second on $6.7m for $25.6m in its second weekend, Buena Vista's Mr3000 fell one to third on $5m for $15.4m inits second weekend, and Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Apocalypse slipped two to fifth on $4m for $43.4m in its thirdweekend.

Overall it was a slow weekend in which all titles combined for$73m, down roughly 22% on the same period last year, with The Forgotten accounting for 30% of ticket sales.

Next weekend's wide releases are: Buena Vista's firefighting dramaLadder 49 starringJohn Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix; DreamWorks' animated title Shark Tale, starring the voice talents of WillSmith, Jack Black, Renee Zellweger et al; and Lions Gate's horror tale Saw, which stars Cary Elwes and DannyGlover.
