Columbia's policeaction-thriller S.W.A.T. stormed to the top of the charts on anestimated $37m at the weekend, a fairly lacklustre session that saw overall boxoffice sink to its lowest mark since late June.

Clark Johnson directed the1970s television series adaptation, which stars Colin Farrell, Samuel L Jacksonand Michelle Rodriguez and averaged $11,555 from 3,202 sites.

Jacksonplays a S.W.A.T. commander whose elite police unit is called in to capture adrug lord on the run in Los Angeles.

The$80m film had mixed reviews and attracted a 54% male audience and roughly thesame percentage of under-25s. It is expected to pass $100m in the coming weeks.

Straightin at number two on $22.3m was Buena Vista's remake of Freaky Friday,starring Jamie Lees Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as the role-swapping mother anddaughter.

Mark Waters directed thefamily film, which reportedly cost less than $20m and has grossed$33.2m since opening on Wednesday. Its three-day average is $7,549 from 2,954theatres.

Criticsloved it and Freaky Friday drew a 30% teenage and 70% female audience.

Combined box office for thetop 12 films was at $127.4m, the lowest level since the Jun 27-29 weekend.

Universal's AmericanWedding slipped two places to third in its second week, adding $15.1m for a$64.9m running total.

BuenaVista's Finding Nemo added $2.5mfor $324.9m in its 11th week and is bearing down on The Lion King'sall-time high for an animated film of $328m.

Elsewhere,Columbia/Revolution's much-reviled Gigli continued its ignominiouscharacter arc, nosediving 82% and nine places to 17th on $640,000for $5.6m in its second week.

Next weekend's releasesinclude Buena Vista's cowboy adventure Open Range, starring KevinCostner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening; New Line's horror-fest Freddy Vs.Jason, starring Monica Keena and Jason Ritter; Warner Bros' skateboardingaction film, Grind, which stars Mike Vogel and Vince Vieluf; Miramax'skung-fu-football romp Shaolin Soccer; and MGM's comedy-drama UptownGirls, starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning.
