Bong Joon-ho's monster film The Host swept Korea's 27th Blue Dragon Awards this Friday (Dec 15),scooping six awards including Best Picture.

Producer Choi Yong-bae saidof the film, which is the country's box office record holder with 13 millionadmissions, "I was concerned the film's box office record was overshadowing itsartistic merits," but that the award helped make up for that.

14-year-old Goh Ah-sungpicked up Best New Actress for her performance as a girl abducted by themonster in the film. Veteran thespian Byun Hee-bong took Best Supporting Actorfor his role as her grandfather.

The sci-fi thriller alsotook the Best Technical award for California-based The Orphanage andSeoul-based EON, as well as Best Lighting and Most Popular Film.

Best Director went to KimTae-yong for quirky drama Family Ties.The film also took Best Supporting Actress for Jung Yoo-mi, who was almost tooshocked for words.

Best Leading Actress went toKim Hye-soo for her sultry performance as a card sharp in Tazza: The High Rollers. Moving from thepodium where she was emcee-ing the show with Jung Joon-ho, she accepted theaward saying, "This role would have made any actress shine."

Best Leading Actor went toAhn Sung-ki and Park Joong-hoon, who played opposite each other in Radio Star - making it their second timeto be co-awardees after Two Cops 12years ago. Directed by Lee Joon-ik (Kingand the Clown), the story of a has-been singer and his long-time agentproved an apt vehicle for the two veterans.

Like a Virgin, a melodrama about a boy who becomes a top wrestler to make money for asex change, scooped up Best Original Screenplay and Best New Director for itsco-directors/co-writers Lee Hae-young and Lee Hae-joon. Star of the film RyuDeok-hwan took Best New Actor.

As the last major awardsceremony of the year and rival to the Grand Bells, the Blue Dragons once againproved a high-profile red carpet affair, with actresses braving near-freezingtemperatures in bare-backed and low-cut silk affairs.
