Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired US rights to Julio Medem’s drama starring Penélope Cruz in the run-up to its Tuesday international premiere in Toronto.

ma ma centres on a woman diagnosed with cancer who experiences a life-changing encounter with a man whose wife and child have been gravely injured in a car accident. Luis Tosar also stars.

Cruz produced with Medem along with Alvaro Longoria for Morena Films.

O-Scope negotiated the deal with CAA. Seville International represents international rights and parent company eOne distributes directly in Canada and Spain, where it opens on Friday.
