Fox's sci-fi adventure Jumper starring Hayden Christensen as a globe trotting teleporter stormed to the top of the domestic charts at the weekend on an estimated $27.2m.

The film has grossed $33.9m since it opened on Thursday and also stars Samuel L Jackson, Diane Lane and Jamie Bell. Doug Liman directed.

Opening in second place was the dance drama Step Up 2 The Streets on $19.7m and $26.3m since the Thursday launch.

Many distributors chose to open films on Thursday to maximize the long Presidents Day weekend which will see most works return to their desks on Tuesday.

Paramount's family saga The Spiderwick Chronicles starring Freddie Highmore launched in third place on $19.1m ($21.4m since Thursday) while Universal's romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe with Ryan Reynolds, Rachel Weisz and Abigail Breslin earned $9.7m at the weekend.

Last weekend's champion Fool's Gold fell three places on $13.1m for $42m, and Fox Searchlight's smash comedy dropped two to seventh in the 11th weekend on $4.6m for $124.1m.

Buena Vista's 3-D sensation Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds tumbled six places to ninth in the third weekend and stands at $58.4m.
