The Weinstein Company's animated release Hoodwinked opened at the top over the four-dayMartin Luther King holiday weekend on an estimated $16.6m, which will be thecompany's first number one launch if results are confirmed this week.

The computer-generated picture, a reworking of the Little RedRiding Hood children's story directed by Cory and Todd Edwards, averaged $6,942on 2,394 screens and just beat out Buena Vista's basketball drama Glory Road.

That picture opened in secondplace on $16.5m and averaged $7,424 on 2,222 screens. It stars Josh Lucas as aninspirational college coach. James Gartner directed.

Opening in third on $15.7m was Paramount's romantic comedy LastHoliday, which starsQueen Latifah as a shy chef who gains a new lease of life. LL Cool J also starsin the film which is loosely based on the Alec Guinness-starrer from 1950 whichwas written by JB Priestley. Wayne Wang directed Last Holiday which averaged $6,245 on 2,514 screens.

The only other new release tobreak into the top 10 was the historical love story Tristan & Isolde starring James Franco and Sophia Myles and directedby Kevin Reynolds. The independently financed picture, produced by Ridley andTony Scott's Scott Free, ranked eighth on $7.9m and averaged $4,254 on 1,845screens.

Narnia felltwo places to fourth in its sixth weekend on $12.2m for $263.4m, three placesahead of King Kong,which stands at $204.7m after five.

Last weekend's champion Hostel fell four places in its second weekend on$11.7m for $36.8m. Lionsgate chiefs expect the picture to finish around the$50m mark.

Columbia's Fun With Dick And Jane ranks sixth on $94.2m after fourweekends and will cross $100m by next weekend. Focus' Brokeback Mountain ranks ninth on $32.1m after six and willbe looking to capitalise on its seven Golden Globe nominations at tonight'sawards ceremony in Los Angeles.

Next weekend's wide releases are New Line's The New World starring Colin Farrell and ChristianBale; Sony's Underworld: Evolution starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman; and WarnerIndependent's Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World, which stars Albert Brooks.
