Django Unchained rules international on $48.1m debut

Quentin Tarantino’s revenge Western opened on 6,235 screens in 54 markets through Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) in an emphatic launch that finished some 30% higher than the aggregated opening weekends of Inglourious Basterds in the same markets.

SPRI executives claimed 23 of the 38 tracked markets delivered number one results. Germany led the way on a $9.6m table topping debut from 620 that was approximately two-and-a-half times bigger than Tarantino’s previous release.

France produced a $7.3m number one debut from 612 that was 25% ahead of Basterds back in its day, while Russia generated a $5.4m number two result from 936 behind Paramount’s Hansel And Gretel.

The UK produced $4.8m from 580 to rank second behind Les Misérables and finish 54% higher than the first weekend of Basterds.

Italy generated $4.3m from 517 for first place and 62% ahead of Basterds, while $3.3m in Spain from 470 resulted in first place although 13% behind Tarantino’s previous film.

Django opened in Austria on $1.3m from 83 for 68% ahead of Basterds while Switzerland delivered a $1.3m number one result from 20 that was 64% ahead of Basterds.

Elsewhere Django opened in Brazil on $1.2m from 180 for third place, $1.2m in Sweden from 135 for number one and $1m in Mexico from 300 to rank second.

SPRI reported that Hotel Transylvania added $2.8m from 34 markets for a $173.8m international running total. Sony/MGM/Eon’s Skyfall keeps on chugging along and brought in a further $2.1m from 31 to raise the tally to $737.6m.

  • Fox International’s multiple Oscar nominee Life Of Pi stands at the cusp of $400m following a $20.7m weekend haul from 7,944 screens in 66 markets that propelled the running total to $393.9m.

Australia was the top earner on $2.9m from 552 for $20.3m after three weekends, followed by the UK on $2m from 633 for $39m after five. Germany stands at $21.6m after four, South Korea $12.1m after three and Mexico $16.6m after five.

Multiple Oscar nominee Lincoln began its roll-out and grossed $3.1m from Spain and Mexico. The historical drama opened in second place in Spain on $2.3m from 344 and placed third in Mexico on $729,391 from 259.

The comedy Parental Guidance added $3.9m from 2,690 in 34 for an early $29.5m international running total. It opened in Russia on $797,183 from 677.

German title Break Up Man added $3.9m from Germany and Switzerland and has amassed $10.3m in two weekends. It stands at $9.8m in Germany to rank second.

  • Working Title’s Les Misérables crossed $150m through Universal Pictures International following a $19.4m haul from 2,900 venues in 29 territories that pushed the running total to $150.5m. Combined with the $130.4m North American tally, the film is expected to cross $300m worldwide this week with 35 markets yet to open.

The musical arrived in seven smaller markets punctuated by a record-breaking session in the Philippines, where it delivered the biggest musical, biggest opening for Tom Hooper and Russell Crowe and the biggest January opening for Universal.

The UK led holdovers as Les Misérables stayed top on $7.4m from 600 for $17.5m. Japan generated $2.4m from 356 for $38.5m after five weekends.

Les Misérables continued its extraordinary run in South Korea, adding $2.3m from 341 in the fifth weekend for $36.5m. Total admissions amount to 5.33m or approximately one-tenth of the population. Australia stands at $21.4m and New Zealand returned a second consecutive number one session as $510,000 from 77 boosted the score to $1.5m.

Ted produced the biggest launch for an American R-rated comedy of all time in Japan on $4.3m from 134 as the international tally climbed to $289.4m.

Horror tale Mama, which opened top in North America, arrived in six smaller markets and grossed $1m overall from 181. It opens in South Korea this week followed by Mexico on Feb 1. Universal distributes in 53 international markets but not Canada.

Zero Dark Thirty, which like Mama stars Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, has reached $3.9m in Spain after three weekends. Universal also holds rights for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and South Africa. It arrives in the UK and France this week.

This Is 40 stands at $3m and opened in Australia on $2.2m from 207. Anna Karenina added $2m from 1,300 in 27 territories for $34.9m. Pitch Perfect stands at $42.2m and ParaNorman $49.3m.

  • Warner Bros Pictures International executives reported on Monday that The Hobbit added $13.2m from 6,811 screens in 63 Gangster Squad grossed $5.5m from 1,471 screens in 24 market for $18.8m, while Argo stands at $71.5m from 41 markets.
  • Paramount Pictures International Jack Reacher brought in $10.8m for $97.8m according to data issued on Monday, while Hansel And Gretel ventured out into its first markets and generated $8.4m, of which $5.4m came from a number two debut in Russia. DreamWorks Animation’s Rise Of The Guardians stands at $191.8m.
  • Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International’s Wreck-It Ralph grossed $8.2m from 60 territories reporting to reach $173.4m internationally and $354.2m worldwide.
  • Lionsgate International reported that Summit’sThe Impossible crossed $100m over the weekend. The tsunami drama grossed $7.9m from 2,700 screens in 47 territories, bolstered by a $1.9m debut in South Korea. The international running total stands at $106m.
