The Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival will screen approximately 400 films from more than 60 countries. The festival is scheduled to run from Sept 27 for 15 days.
Brazilian director Breno Silveira’s Gonzaga – From Father To Son will open the festival and the selection includes Twixt from Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, Michel Gondry’s The We And The I and Stories We Tell, Sarah Polley’s acclaimed documentary that just screened in Toronto.
Programme sections include Panorama, Expectation 2012, Première Brazil, Latin Première, Midnight, Midnight Horror, Midnight Music, Gay, Frontiers, Dox, Film Doc, Generation, Unique Itineraries and Threatened Environment.
The festival will pay tribute to directors Alberto Cavalcanti, John Carpenter, Manoel de Oliveira and João Pedro Rodrigues.
A four-day UK focus will include an open air screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Pleasure Garden. There is also a tribute to Portugal to mark The Year Of Portugal in Brazil.
For the second year the Armazém 6 of Cais do Porto will host RioMarket and daily events related to Cine Chat and Première Brazil.
“This is the most important film event in Latin America,” said RioFilme CEO Sérgio Sá Leitão. “It is a great showcase for domestic production and an unequalled opportunity for the people of Rio to have the chance to engage with the best of international cinema.”
