TIFF to host premieres from Coen brothers, Barrymore

Joel and Ethan Coen’s no-name black comedy A Serious Man will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

TIFF has also revealed that it will host the world premiere for Oliver Parker’s Dorian Gray, an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde parable starring Ben Barnes in the title role and Colin Firth as his charismatic mentor.

It has also announced world premiere Special Presentations including:

  • Danis Tanovic’s Ireland-Spain co-production Triage, starring Colin Farrell
  • Ian Fitzgibbon’s Perrier’s Bounty, an Ireland-set mob comedy starring Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent;
  • Daniel Barber’s urban western Harry Brown, starring Michael Caine as man who takes back the streets from a gang of teenage thugs
  • Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It, a roller derby-themed drama with Ellen Page in the lead

Among the North American premieres selected for Special Presentation are Shirin Neshat’s Women Without Men, a Germany-France-Austria coproduction based on the magic-realist novel by Iranian author Sharnush Parsipur; Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, in which the master polemicist examines the impact of corporations on the world; and Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage, as a drug-addicted detective on the trail of a dealer in the post-Katrina Big Easy.

Rebecca Miller’s Berlin title The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, starring Robin Wright Penn and Alan Arkin has also been unveiled as a gala presentation.
