TIFF selects 14 projects for Masters, also by de Oliveira, Haneke, Kiarostami, Mungiu. Mavericks discussions include David Geffen.

Toronto has announced its Masters programme of 14 films, including world premieres of new films by Michael Winterbottom, Goran Paskaljevic and Bernard Emond.

“These Masters films represent cinema’s living legacy,” said Piers Handling, Director and CEO, TIFF. “We are proud to present new work from directors as renowned as Manoel de Oliveira, Michael Haneke, Bernardo Bertolucci and Abbas Kiarostami. All 14 filmmakers command the respect of audiences, critics and above all their filmmaking peers.”

The world premieres include Michael Winterbottom’s Everyday, which was filmed over a period of five years and looks at a mother (Shirley Henderson) trying to raise four children herself while her husband (John Simm) is in prison. In When Day Breaks, Paskaljevic tells the story of a retired music professor whose life is changed by the contents of an iron box found in the ruins of a concentration camp. As previously reported, the Masters section also includes the world premiere of Quebecois Bernard Emond’s All That You Possess, about a scholar who wants to withdraw from the world but finds his family ties pulling him back in.
