As Toronto headed into the closing weekend, First Look Studios paid just over $3m to US rights for Melisa Wallack and Bernie Goldmann's comedy Bill starring Aaron Eckhart. Maple Films paid mid-six figures for Canadian rights.

First Look Holdings co-chairmen Avi Lerner and Henry Winterstern and executive vice president of acquisitions Gary Hirsch negotiated the deal with Endeavor's Graham Taylor and Cinetic's John Sloss. The deal closed in the early hours of Friday morning [Sept 14].

The film premiered at Toronto the weekend before last and stars Eckhart as a loser who finds a new lease of life when he mentors a rebellious teen. Logan Lerman, Jessica Alba and Timothy Olyphant also star.

Wallack wrote the screenplay and GreeneStreet Films' Fisher Stevens and John Penotti produced with Matthew Rowland. and GreeneStreet's Tim Williams served as executive producers.

'This is a solid cast, and a bold, funny script,' Hirsch said. 'Eckhart was fantastic in No Reservations and Thank You For Smoking, and Bill has the same comedic sensibility.'

At time of writing sustained interest had coalesced around the horror films Mother Of Tears by Dario Argento and Frontieres by France's Xavier Gens. Deals were expected shortly, while Mark Heller's drama The Passage was also in play.
