Universal's JohnnyEnglish remained the runaway numberone international hit for the second weekend in a row, according to studioestimates released today (Apr 21).

The comedy, which stars theBritish comedian Rowan Atkinson as a highly maladroit spy, added a stunning$18.5m from 3,480 theatres in 38 markets for a $50m international running totalafter two weeks.

In the UK thefilm held firmly on to number one, dropping only 26% and grossing another $4mfrom 442 theatres. Johnny English enjoyed 35% market share and has taken a staggering $13.6m in twoweeks.

In Singapore JohnnyEnglish scored the bestever industry comedy opening and Universal's seventh best opening weekend ofall time in the market, grossing $783,000 (including previews) at 48 theatres.

In Hong Kongeven the fear of SARS could not keep audiences away as Johnny English opened on top on $579,000 from 31 venues.This was Universal's 11th biggest opening weekend ever in the market.

A record-breaking number onebow in Malaysia produced $334,000 (including previews) from 40 theatres. It wasthe best ever industry comedy opening and Universal's 11th best opening weekendof all time in the market.

Thailand alsoyielded a number one opening as the film grossed $362,000 from 54 venues, whilein the Philippines it grossed a terrific $180,000 from 35 sites.

In Latin Americathe news was strong, if a little less spectacular. Johnny English opened fourth in Mexico, grossing$790,000 (including previews) from 149 theatres.

Brazil's openingweekend saw the film place fourth on $240,000 from 120 sites. In Chile itopened fifth on $36,000 from 17 sites.

In Europe, where ongoingEaster holidays meant final figures were unavailable from some markets, thefilm stayed at the top in Germany for the second consecutive week. It added$3.5m from 727 sites, dropping a mere 22% for an 11-day total of $10m.

Spain raised itstotal to $3.3m after a second weekend gross of $1.3m from 319 theatres, whilein Austria the film was number one in its second week, adding $450,000 from 86sites for $1.7m.

In Australia itopened in second place behind Columbia TriStar's Anger Management on $1.4m from 213 sites. The slight 12%drop means Johnny English has grossed $3.8m.

In its secondweek in New Zealand the film finished second behind Columbia TriStar's MaidIn Manhattan on $164,000from 45 sites for $500,000.

There are still 12 moremarkets to open, with Greece and Taiwan set to open next weekend.
