German writer-director Rainer Matsutani has set up a newUK-based production house Red Sun Films.

Speaking exclusively to Screendaily.com,Matsutani explained that the company's name was inspired by Terence Young's1971 East-meets-West western starring Charles Bronson, Alain Delon, UrsulaAndress and Toshiro Mifune.

Matsutani's partners at the London-based outfit are UKproducer Tim Cranage (who worked at German private broadcaster ProSieben inMunich until last year), Jens-Peter "JP" Johanssen and Noemi Domokos.

Red Sun will be concentrating on genre feature films costingbetween $5m-$20m and has a slate of five features being developed for Matsutanito direct. The first film is likely to be the sci-fi thriller Replay which he has co-written with DonSchubert and Fabian Marquez.

Other projects in development with him as co-screenwriterare the horror film Hungry Ghosts;action film Red Guard; thriller The 17th Floor; and love story/horrorfilm Daydream Believer.

Matsutani's director credits include Nur Ueber Meine Leiche (1995),666 - Traue Keinem Mit Dem DuSchlaefst! (2002) and episodes of the Lexx:The Dark Zone cult sci-fi mini-series which starred Rutger Hauer, MalcolmMcDowell and Tim Curry.
