The director of educational programmes and special projects since 2003 becomes the newly minted MD of programming, education and preservation.
Academy COO Ric Robertson, to whom Haberkamp will report, made the announcement on Wednesday (11) and said: “Randy’s track record of creative programming, coupled with his expertise as a film historian, makes him perfectly suited for this position.
“His leadership will be invaluable as we continue to develop compelling programmes, initiatives and events that celebrate the movies.”
Haberkamp will oversee the Academy Film Archive and the Margaret Herrick Library, two leading preservation and research institutions whose holdings include the collections of Cecil B DeMille, Alfred Hitchcock, Katharine Hepburn, Jim Henson and Sydney Pollack.
The repositories contain more than 146,000 film and video assets, 80,000 screenplays and 10million photographs.
He will also assume oversight of the Academy’s 100-plus annual public programmess in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and London and oversee $1m in institutional and film festival grants as well as the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting programme.
