Finola Dwyer to produce Quartet alongside Stewart Mackinnon of Headline Pictures

Dustin Hoffman is in advanced negotations to direct Quartet, which is being adapted by Oscar winning writer Ronald Harwood from his 1999 stage play of the same name.

The project, which would be the directorial debut of the veteran Hollywood actor, has been developed by BBC Films with Stewart Mackinnon’s Headline Pictures. Finola Dywer, fresh from her success as co-producer of An Education, has signed on to produce alongside Mackinnon.

Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney are in the frame to play elderly opera singers, living in a retirement home outside London.

Filming is due to take place in the UK in the autumn.

Christine Langan, creative director of BBC Films, commented: “Dustin’s coming on board as the director is the icing on the cake, really. His understanding of the material and his take on it is incredibly exciting, deep and inspiring.”
