The Serbian Academy of Film Arts and Sciences has selected Srdan Golubovic's The Trap (Klopka) for the Oscar race. The Serbian-German-Hungarian co-production is a thriller about a man who decides to take on a hitman's task in order to be able to pay for a life-saving operation for his son. It has picked up a number of international awards, including the Grand Prix at Sofia.

Separately, Janez Lapajne's Short Circuits (Kratki Stiki) has been chosen as Slovenia's foreign language candidate for Academy Awards by the country's Association of Film Authors. The drama about human relationships and different ways of looking at events is told through three parallel stories. At the ninth Festival of Slovenian Film, it scooped nine out of 16 awards, including best film, best director, best screenplay and best actress in a leading role.
