According to studio estimates for the first three days of the Memorial Day long weekend, Shrek 2 outperformed The Day After Tomorrow domestically, grossing about $73.1m against Day's $70m - and retained the first place in the box office charts.
Shrek 2's performance also broke the record for second-weekend highest grosser, previously held by Spider-Man's $71.4m.
The next record in Shrek's sights is the four-day Memorial holiday take of $90.2m, set by The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997.
