Dinard has its golf tournament, and now Tribeca has its football (that’s soccer for our Stateside readers).

New York’s first film and Entertainment Soccer Tournament is being organised with Tribeca Film Festival in partnership with UMBRO. The April 23 activities include a five-a-side industry tournament (perhaps a good prelude to the Cannes charity tournament). One of the founders is Dylan Leiner, Executive VP of Acquisitions & Production for Sony Pictures Classics and a former college soccer player. He said: “Our vision of hosting an entertainment-based soccer tournament in NY, the world’s most international city, took shape several years back. When the opportunity arose to work with the Tribeca Film Festival to bring the idea to fruition, we jumped at the chance.”

Tribeca Enterprises’ Geoff Gilmore will help with the ceremonial coin toss, but he may be overshadowed by Pele’s appearance.

Companies expected to compete include Sony Pictures Classics, Visit Films, Goldcrest, CAA, Paradigm, Focus Features, FilmNation, The Gersh Agency and Deluxe to name a few.
