CHINA BOX OFFICE: Frant Gwo’s romantic drama My Old Classmate held onto pole position at the Chinese box office last week with a futher haul of $34.63m, while opener The Great Hypnotist came in second with $22.28m.

Starring Zhou Dongyu and Lin Gengxin, My Old Classmate has grossed $52.3m after two weeks on release. Leste Chen’s The Great Hypnotist, starring Xu Zheng and

Karen Mok, opened on April 30, just before the three-day Labour Day public holiday in China. The Wanda Media production played as the closing film at last month’s Beijing International Film Festival.

In its second week (April 28 to May 4), Donnie Yen vehicle Ice Man 3D came in third grossing a further $10.49m for a cumulative gross of $21.99m.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took fourth position in just one day (Sunday, May 4), grossing $9.75m from 1.5 million admissions. The strong result is all the more impressive as May 4 was officially a work day, following the three-day break.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier came in fifth with $7.58m and an impressive cume of $115.62m after 31 days. The Disney/Marvel production is the highest-grossing foreign film of the year so far in China.

Filling out the rest of the top ten were Fox animation Rio 2 (weekly gross $5.71m; cume $37.95m), US-Korean animation The Outback ($2.86m in its opening four days), Transcendence ($2.2m; $20.28m), That Demon Within ($1.5m; $17.43m) and Zambezia ($1.41m in its opening five days)
