A gala screening of Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation with the director in attendance will open this year's Vienna International Film Festival (Viennale) on October 17.

The main programme of 100 new feature films and documentaries will be rounded off on October 29 by Julie Bertucelli's Depuis Qu'Otar Est Parti at a closing ceremony when the winners of the FIPRESCI Prize, Vienna Film Prize and Standard Viennale Readers' Prize will be announced.

The Main Programme will include a world premiere of Zhu Cuanming's laconically precise study of the life of farmers in the Chinese mountains Shang Shan as well as international premieres of such films as Thom Andersen's Los Angeles Plays Itself and Zelimir Zilnik's Kenedi Se Vraca Kuci.

Sidebars are being dedicated to the work of actor-directors Warren Beatty and Vincent Gallo, political documentary filmmaker Emile de Antonio and to the contribution by the Munich music publisher/record label ECM to world cinema.
