‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’

Another film has joined the growing roster of summer theatrical releases in the US as Disney announced it has dated Searchlight Pictures’ The Personal History Of David Copperfield for August 14.

Armando Iannucci’s Charles Dickens adaptation starring Dev Patel will launch in limited release. The film premiered in Toronto last September.

The development throws another potential awards contender into the mix. Speculation is ongoing as to whether the Academy will postpone its 93rd Oscars ceremony from February 28 2021 until later next spring and expand eligibility dates to accommodate more contenders from the start of next year.

Disney has removed children’s adventure adaptation The One And Only Ivan from August 14 and will release the film on Disney+. Helen Mirren, Angelina Jolie and Sam Rockwell are among the voice cast.

Peter Jackson’s music documentary The Beatles: Get Back moves from September 4 to August 27, and 20th Century Studios’ musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie directed by Jonathan Butterell is postponed from October 23 to January 22, 2021.
