The European Film Academyhas announced 46 films in its shortlist for this year's European Film Awardsnominations.

Each year, the Academyselects about 40 films that will be sent to its members for final nominations -this year's number of films is up from last year's selection list of 42.

The choices include DavidMackenzie's Asylum, Jacques Audiard's The Beat That My Heart Skipped, the Dardenne Brothers' The Child (L'Enfant), Pjer Zalica's Days andHours, Wim Wenders' Don't Come Knocking, Erik Poppe's Hawaii Oslo,Terry George's Hotel Rwanda, Lars von Trier's Manderlay, PawelPawlikowski's My Summer of Love, Eran Riklis' The Syrian Bride, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement. (See full selection list below.)

For the firsttime, nearly half of the films were selected by votes from EFA members in the20 European countries, who each vote for one national film released in theircountry from July 2004 until May 2005. The film with the highest votes fromeach country is automatically included in the shortlist. A committee includingthe EFA board and other experts selects the rest of the shortlist from the 250films proposed by film institutions, festivals, media members, EFA members, andproducers.

These 46 filmsare now made available on video and DVD to EFA's membership of about 1600members who will vote via postal ballot to determine this year's nominees. EFAwill announce the nominations on November 6 at the Seville Film Festival. Winnerswill be announced at the awards ceremony in Berlin on December 3. The Academyitself is producing this year's ceremony, after ending an 8-year relationshipwith former producers DDA Productions.

Theaward categories are European film, director, actress, actor, screenwriter, cinematographer, composer, and - for the first year -- production designer andeditor. Other awards are achievement in world cinema, the Prix Fassbinder, thePrix Fipresci, the Prix Arte (documentary), the Prix UIP (short film), and thePrix Screen International (non-European film). The Jameson's People's choice awards are voted on by European audiencemembers from a separate shortlist of 10 films per category. The lifetime achievementaward, as announced last week, will be given to Sir Sean Connery.

To be eligible, works must be European feature-length fictional films, intended for theatricalrelease and completed after July 1, 2004.(It should be noted that films not on this list could win nominations --producers whose films were not among the selected list still have the option ofseeking nominations by sending screeners to EFA members at their own expense.)
