Nominations for France's equivalent to the Oscars were announced Friday morning in Paris with Public Enemy Number One(Mesrine)at the top of the heap, and Arnaud Desplechin's A Christmas Tale (Un Conte De Noel)and Remi Bezancon's Le Premier Jour Du Reste De Ta Vie tying with nine nods each.
Cannes Palme d'Or winner The Class (Entre Les Mur)also scored five Cesar nominations while Philippe Claudel's I've Loved You So Long took six.
Those five films were also all nominated for best picture along with Cedric Klapisch's Paris and Martin Provost's Seraphine.
In the acting categories, Vincent Cassel is nominated for best actor for Public Enemy Number One(Mesrine) alongside Premier Jour's Jacques Gamblin, Francois-Xavier Demaison for Coluche, L'Histoire D'Un Mec, while Albert Dupontel is recognised for Deux Jours A Tuer and, in a posthumous nod, Guillaume Depardieu for Versailles.
Kristin Scott Thomas picked up a nomination for her lauded, yet Oscar-omitted, role in Claudel's I've Loved You So Long. Joining her in the race are Catherine Frot for Le Crime Est Notre Affaire, Yolande Moreau in Seraphine, Tilda Swinton in Julia and Sylvie Testud in Sagan.
Bezancon, Cantet, Desplechin, Provost and Richet all made the cut in the directing category.
Best foreign film mentions went to Bouli Lanners' Eldorado, Matteo Garrone's Gomorra, Sean Penn's Into The Wild, the Dardenne brothers' Lorna's Silence, Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, James Gay's Two Lovers and Ari Folman's Oscar nominated Waltz With Bashir.
Local box office smashWelcome To The Sticks (Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis)picked up just one nod for original screenplay.
