Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal will act as ambassador to Critics Week in Cannes this year. Organizers announced the news on Thursday and said that the Babel star will unveil his first directorial effort, Deficit, during the fortnight.

Bernal is well-known in Cannes having come to the festival several times including with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Amores Perros which won the Critics Week grand prize in 2000, followed by Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries in 2004, Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education in 2005 and last year's Inarritu project, Babel .

Bernal follows in the footsteps of Gaspar Noe who was ambassador to Critics Week last year.
