Beijing-based Infotainment China has announced the shooting of $1.7m (RMB12m) martial arts drama The Robbers.

The film is directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Yang Shupeng (The Cold Flame). Shanghai Film Group, Stella Megamedia and Infotainment are co-investing in the project.

Hu Jun (Red Cliff), Jiang Wu (Shower), Taiwanese actor Li Liqun and TV actress Yu Xiaolei are starring in the film, which began principal photography on March 16 in a village near Hangzhou city.

Set during the Tang Dynasty, The Robbers tells the story of two robbers' adventures in a seemingly peaceful Bitter Bamboo Village, where they encounter a beautiful woman, a group of soldiers and a village head scheming to kill the duo. Hu Jun will play the arrow-shooting Xue Shisan and Jiang Wu will portray swordsman Chen Liu.

The Robbers was one of the projects in last year's China Film Pitch and Catch (CFPC) at Shanghai International Film Festival and the winner of CFPC's prize for having the most market potential. Shanghai Film Group and Stellar Megamedia came on board after the project's recognition at SIFF.

Beijing-based Infotainment is also releasing Yang's debut feature The Cold Flame in China 's cinemas on April 18. The film follows a 14-year-old girl and a soldier's peculiar love story, set in war-time Northern China. Zhang Hanyu (Assembly) and Michelle Gong head the cast.
