Jennifer Lopez confirmed her status as an international star overthe weekend as Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International (CTFDI) scoreda powerful $11.5m weekend gross for Revolution Studios' Maid In Manhattan.
In a series of excellent openings, the romantic comedy wentstraight to number one in the UK, Australia, Mexico, the German-speakingregions of Switzerland, the Philippines, Austria, Singapore and India. Taiwanwas a race between first and second place at time of writing. All figuresinclude previews except for Switzerland, Taiwan and India. Still in its earlydays, Maid In Manhattanhas rung up a $12.6m international running total.
In the UK the picture took $3.6m (£2.3m) from 446 screens,compared to previous £1.9m openings for Miss Congeniality and £1.5m for RunawayBride. In Germany only the continued success of the local language hit Goodbye,Lenin kept Maid InManhattan off the topspot. It opened in second place on $2.8m (Euros 2.6m) from 852 screens,compared to the Euros 2.5m opening for My Best Friend's Wedding.
Australia produced $1.9m (A$3.1m) from 308 screens, compared to theA$2.8m opening of My Best Friend's Wedding. In Switzerland Maid In Manhattan grossed $425,000 from 66 screens. In thePhilippines the picture scored the biggest ever opening for a romantic comedywith $450,000 from 25 screens.
Austria produced $400,000 from 82 screens, roughly the same as theopening weekend of My Best Friend's Wedding, while in Singapore the picture took$286,000 from 27 screens, again roughly the same take as My Best Friend's Wedding. Taiwan yielded $155,000 from 56 screens,while Maid In Manhattangrossed $70,000 from 20 screens in India.
In its second week in Malaysia the picture dropped from first tosecond place, grossing $45,000 from 25 screens. Maid In Manhattan is scheduled to open next weekend inFrance, the rest of Switzerland, Hong Kong, parts of Eastern Europe and CentralAmerica; Russia and Korea follow on the weekend beginning Mar 20; and Belgiumand Holland are due to open on the weekend beginning Mar 27.
