Natalie Portman has signed up to play Cathy Earnshaw in John Maybury's new adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae's UK-based Ecosse Films is producing. HanWay Films is handling sales.

Bernstein said: 'I'm delighted that we have attracted an actress of Natalie Portman's calibre to Wuthering Heights, she will bring an intensity and depth to one of literature most acclaimed heroines.'
