
The 27th annual Newport Beach Film Festival (October 15-22) will open with the documentary Frampton charting the tumultuous life of rock star Peter Frampton. Festival brass have also announced further programming and the honorees roster.
Rob Arthur’s film weaves together archive footage and interviews to recount Frampton’s rollercoaster ride from his meteoric rise in the 1970s to solo career, and his late diagnosis with a rare degenerative muscle condition. Frampton and Arthur will participate in a post-screening Q&A.
The closing night documentary feature Unleashed Spirits: The Rise Of The Hollywood Vampires follows the supergroup comprising Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and hard rock guitarist Tommy Henriksen inspired by Cooper’s 1970s secret drinking club. The director and members of the band will be in attendance.
Among the honourees being recognised on October 18 are Taraji P. Henson from the upcoming ‘Tis So Sweet who will receive the Artist of Distinction Award; Jack O’Connell from festival selection Ink with the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award; Mckenna Grace from the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping with the Spotlight Award; Sosie Bacon from SXSW entry Family Movie with the Breakout Award; and Sarah Finn from festival selection Wild Horse Nine with the Casting Visionary Award.
Additional honorees include Gemma Chan with the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award at a screening of Josephine on October 20; Justin Hartley with the Artist of Distinction Award at a Sunset Series event on October 19; KJ Apa with the Spotlight Award at a screening of Jimmy on October 17; and Jonás Cuarón, who will receive the Artist of Distinction award at a screening of his migrant boxer drama Campeón Gabacho on October 19.
