The American Film Institute (AFI) has unveiled its list of the outstanding films and TV shows of 2022 and will give a special award to The Banshees Of Inisherin.
The AFI movies of the year are: Avatar: The Way Of Water; Elvis; Everything Everywhere All At Once; The Fabelmans; Nope; She Said; TÁR; Top Gun: Maverick; The Woman King; and Women Talking.
The top TV shows are: Abbott Elementary; The Bear; Better Call Saul; Hacks; Mo; Pachinko Reservation Dogs; Severance; Somebody Somewhere; and The White Lotus.
Banshees receives a special award given to ”works of excellence” that fall outside the AFI’s eligibility criteria which call for selections to be in narrative fiction format, have significant creative and/or production elements from the US, and have received their first run between January 1 and December 31 202.
In this case Banshees does not satisfy the second requirement of having significant creative and/or production elements from the US.
AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale hailed this year’s honorees ”as they have lifted our spirits through the most challenging of times and proven the power of this great art form”.
The honorees will be celebrated at a private lunch in Beverly Hills on January 13, 2023.
