The keynote at this year’s TIFFCOM market in Tokyo is set to be delivered by Chris Brearton and Dominic Hughes of AGBO, the US independent studio behind the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

The session will focus on the artist-led use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and other tools, and on bringing technology and storytelling together. It is set to take place on October 29.

AGBO is the Los Angeles-based studio that was founded in 2017 by Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe including blockbuster Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Doomsday, which is in post-production ahead of release on December 18.

Brearton joined AGBO as partner in 2024, where he works alongside the Russo brothers and Donald Mustard. He was previously VP of corporate strategy at Amazon MGM Studios, having previously run MGM Studios where he was the chief architect of its $8.45bn sale to Amazon.

Hughes is chief scientific officer at AGBO and is known as a leader in algorithms, machine learning and AI. At AGBO, he partners with the studio’s storytelling and innovation teams to guide the development and deployment of AI technologies throughout the creative process.

TIFFCOM, the content market that runs alongside Tokyo International Film Festival, has also announced further sessions.

The lineup includes the Association of Japanese Animations’ Anime Industry Report, paired with case studies from Nippon Animation and Production I.G, and an international anime co-production conference featuring Ervin Han, director of Annecy award-winner The Violinist.

The 23rd TIFFCOM will be held from October 28-30 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center.
