AGC Studios will kick off pre-sales in Cannes on the family animation Critterz based on the screenplay by Paddington In Peru writers James Lamont and Jon Foster and Tom Butterworth.

Nik Kleverov, a co-founder of the Los Angeles-based company Native Foreign that works in live-action and AI-enhanced content, will direct what is described as the “human-led and AI-assisted” project based on Native Foreign’s 2023 viral short Critterz.

Kleverov served as executive producer on the short directed by Chad Nelson, which claimed to be the first to use OpenAI’s creative tools.

The feature version of Critterz centres on an anxious woodland creature who teams up with eccentric outcasts on a quest to find her long-lost brother.

Nelson, who is creative strategist at OpenAI, serves as a producer alongside Allan Niblo and James Richardson from the UK’s Vertigo Films. Pascal Breton, Lionel Uzan, Jane Moore, AGC Studios chairman and CEO Stuart Ford, and Aghi Koh are the executive producers.

“This ground-breaking feature demonstrates for the first time how AI can integrate into production without replacing artistry, becoming a tool for exploration rather than substitution,” Ford said.

AGC Studios is in post-production on Lauren Miller Rogen’s Babies starring Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen, Ellie Foumbi’s erotic thriller Fleur with Halle Berry, and family adventure Fing! starring Taika Waititi. The company is in pre-production on J Blakeson’s Sweat starring Ana de Armas.

AGC Television is currently shooting the geo-political action thriller series Embassy wth Kendrick, Sam Heughan and J.K. Simmons, and Beatles biopic series Hamburg Days.
