Yuri Gomes and Teca Pereira in ‘Gugu’s World’

The Brazilian Film Academy has selected Allan Deberton’s Gugu’s World to fly the flag as the country’s submission for the Oscar international feature film contest.

Gugu’s World was announced on Wednesday (September 16) as the selection committee’s top choice out of six finalists. It stars Yuri Gomes as a football-loving queer pre-teen raised with unconditional love by his grandmother, who is becoming frail. Teca Pereira also stars.

The feature from Deberton Filmes and Biônica Filmes premiered in Berlin where it won the Generation Kplus Crystal Bear and grand jury prize. Paris Filmes will release it in Brazil on November 5 and M-appeal handles world sales.

Gugu’s World was made with the support of PNAB, PNAB CE, Governo do Ceará, BRDE, FSA, ANCINE, and the culture ministry.

In a statement translated into English by Screen, Deberton said: “I thank everyone involved in the film for the sake of the history of Gugu, for the cinema and for the country that needs to unite, for the need to talk and prove that we are all one nation, rich in people, in culture, in our diversity, rich in the stories of cinema that are being created right now […] Congratulations to all who make Brazilian cinema.”
