Watermelon Pictures has acquired North American rights from Luxbox to Diego Luna’s migrant drama Ashes (Ceniza En La Boca) ahead of screenings in Toronto International Film Festival’s Centrepiece programme next month.
Adapted from Mexican author Brenda Navarro’s novel, Ashes stars Anna Díaz as a young woman who leaves Mexico with her younger brother to reunite in Spain with their mother, played by Adriana Paz, after many years apart.
Luna, Abia Castillo and Diego Rabasa co-wrote the screenplay and Luna produced with Inna Payan, Valérie Delpierre, Luis Salinas, and Diego Rabasa.
The film is a production of La Corriente del Golfo, Animal de Luz Films, Inicia Films and Perro Azul, with support from ICAA. Watermelon Pictures’ Munir Atalla brokered the deal with Jean-Benoit Henry of Luxbox.
Ashes receives its North American premiere in Toronto on September 15.
