Netflix has confirmed that it is moving ahead with Sony Pictures Animation on a sequel to this weekend’s animation Oscar favourite KPop Demon Hunters with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans set to return.
The project will become the first in a new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal across animation between Netflix, Kang and Appelhans.
KPop Demon Hunters is the runaway favourite to win the Oscar at Sunday’s (March 15) 98th Academy Awards. The feature about a ramen-guzzling trio of girl band demon hunters is the streamer’s most-watched film of all time. Sony Pictures Animation will serve as producer on the sequel.
Kang said, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
Appelhans noted, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
