‘Raging’

EXCLUSIVE: Thailand’s Diversion has acquired world sales rights to Raging by Filipino director Ryan Machado, which is set to have its international premiere in Berlinale’s Panorama strand.

The film is a story of male abuse and environmental exploitation. Set in the mid-1990s on Sibuyan Island in the Philippines, it follows a young man’s quest for truth and justice as he witnesses a strange plane crash and uncovers a sinister plot that propels his desire to be heard while also threatening his community.

Elijah Canlas, who takes the leading role, was among the cast of Antoinette Jadone’s Sunshine, which premiered at Toronto in 2024 before screening in last year’s Generation 14plus section of the Berlinale.

It marks the second feature Machado, who was at the Berlinale in 2024 with debut Huling Palabas in Generation 14plus.

Raging had its world premiere at Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in October, winning best cinematography and best sound. It is produced by Alemberg Ang, Sarah Brakensiek and Joy Jamora.

Diversion’s Mai Meksawan negotiated the deal with producer Ang from Daluyong Studios. The Bangkok-based company will handle world sales outside The Philippines.

Diversion’s portfolio comprises a number of independent titles from the Philippines, including Lav Diaz’s 2024 Venice title Phantosmia and Sheron Dayoc’s The Gospel Of The Beast, which played in competition at Tokyo in 2023.

Daluyong Studios’ slate also includes Isabel Sandoval’s Moonglow, now playing in Rotterdam’s Big Screen Competition, and Arvin Belarmino’s upcoming debut Ria.
