William Fitzgerald, director of the Galway Film Fair, the industry arm of Galway Film Fleadh, has been named the next president of the Europa Film Festivals network, which develops resources, business models and best practices across the industry.
Alongside the Fleadh, the 12 member festivals include Filmfest Hamburg, Iceland’s Stockfish Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival and Belfast Film Festival.
Fitzgerald takes over from outgoing president and Europa Film Festivals co-founder Alexis Juncosa, who remains artistic director at Luxembourg’s Lux Film Festival.
“It is a privilege to take on the presidency of Europa Film Festivals,” said Fitzgerald, who became director of Ireland’s Galway Film Fleadh industry market last year, having previously held the post of cinema programmer at Galway’s Pálás cinema and at the Fleadh.
“I look forward to building on the network’s achievements to date, strengthening relationships between our member festivals, and ensuring festivals continue to play a vital role in supporting filmmakers and audiences across Europe.”
